28,400 Breakdowns Expected on First Monday Back to Work
- 28,400 breakdowns are expected on Monday 5th January as many people head back to work after the festive break
- The 5th of January is expected to be the busiest day of the year for breakdowns, with twice the average number of call outs
- Battery-related issues account for almost a third (32%) of all call outs
- Green Flag is calling for drivers to start their engines periodically over the festive period, to help prevent a flat start in 2026
With the festivities behind us and daily life resuming, motorists may face an unwelcome surprise. Breakdown provider Green Flag predicts a sharp rise in breakdowns with over 28,400 call outs expected1 on 5th January, double the usual daily average. It is anticipated that a vehicle will require breakdown support every three seconds on Monday the 5th. Green Flag urges drivers to check their vehicles before hitting the road to avoid starting the new year with an unexpected breakdown.
Almost a third (32%) of callouts are expected to be linked to battery issues. Green Flag mechanics also expect to help customers with flat tyres and cars failing to start due to engine issues after the festive break. Some vehicles will have been parked without being started for two weeks while people enjoyed the festivities, which is why 5th January is traditionally a day that sees a huge spike in callouts for Green Flag’s expert mechanics.
Katie Lomas, Managing Director at Green Flag commented: “That first Monday back after the festive break can be hectic as many people start their vehicles for the first time in a couple of weeks. Not only is it likely to be a busy time on the roads, it is also expected that many people will experience issues with their cars. To avoid problems, it’s a good idea to start your vehicle regularly over the festive period. A 20-30 minute drive can make all the difference, as it helps to recharge the battery, circulate fluids, prevent brake components from sticking, and maintain overall tyre health.”
