After the turbulent weather of recent weeks, the UK is set to bake this weekend with soaring temperatures expected across the country. And with much of the country getting ready for their Summer Holidays, motorists are set to hit the streets to take advantage of the change in weather.

As a result, breakdown expert Green Flag is predicting just under 100,000 breakdowns to occur between Thursday 30th July and Monday 3rd August – on average, a 20 per cent increase per day in incidents compared to normal. This translates to a staggering 14 breakdowns per minute across the course of the next few days.

Friday, with temperatures of up to 33 degrees in certain parts of the UK, is set to be the worst affected day, with a 43 per cent rise in incidents expected on UK roads.

Simon Henrick, Head of News at Green Flag, commented: “After the recent unseasonable July weather, and with lockdown restrictions continuing to ease across much of the country, we expect there will be increased traffic on the roads as Brits take advantage of the rise in temperatures. However, it’s important to be aware of the effects that heat can have on the car’s key components, as well as the impact it can have on the road itself.

“Green Flag wants to ensure that drivers can enjoy the warm weather by staying safe on the roads. Several of the problems that motorists are likely to encounter are avoidable if drivers ensure that their vehicles are checked thoroughly before setting off on any long journeys."

To help drivers, reach their destinations safely, Green Flag has released several common-sense tips to stay safe in the hot weather.

Green Flag’s Common-Sense Tips to Reduce Risk of Breakdown in The Heat:

  1. Make sure your cooling system is filled to the correct level - A common cause of engine overheating is low coolant. To avoid this, drivers should make sure the cooling system is filled to the correct level between the minimum and maximum marks on coolant bottle.
  2. Make sure your coolant isn't past its sell by date - Coolant has a lifespan, and once it's over it, it's not any use. Coolant that is past its sell by date will cause more harm than good. It may leave deposits in the car’s engine and radiator that can lead to poor coolant flow
  3. Don't overload your vehicle - When heading out in hot weather, cars often get overloaded with luggage and other items, but to help avoid breakdowns, drivers should limit the amount they pack. Overloading the car boot means the car has to work harder and will use more fuel.
