Batten down the hatches, Storm Gareth is on the way later today

  • The Met Office has issued national weather warnings for across the UK with rain, wind, snow and ice expected to hit
  • Direct Line will be working to help customers hit by the storm with experts and extreme weather vehicles at the ready
  • Home insurance experts available for interview across the UK

With storm Gareth on the way, the Met Office has issued widespread weather warnings for the UK over the next couple of days. The possibility of winds reaching over 50 mph could lead to falling trees and debris, as well as significant damage to homes across the United Kingdom. In preparation, Direct Line Home Insurance provides advice for householders on how to protect their homes.

The impact of a storm can be substantial, with roof damage or smashed windows costing householders hundreds if not thousands of pounds to repair ceilings and replace contents around the home.

Dan Simson Head of Home Insurance for Direct Line said: “With Storm Gareth forecast to hit the UK bringing 50 mph winds, householders across the UK could face some seriously challenging weather conditions, making it incredibly important for householders to take a few simple precautions in order to protect both themselves and their homes from the winter weather.

“It’s important that householders keep up to date with local weather warnings, making sure any loose items that could potentially become dangerous in storm conditions, such as garden furniture, are stored away in advance of the expected gales. Taking simple steps like securing loose items can help keep disruption and damage to a minimum.”

Before high winds strike:

1.       Shut and lock all windows and doors. Damage to garage and shed doors are also common claims so be sure to keep these closed and locked when not in use. This will not only prevent the wind blowing them off the hinges, but it is also good practice to keep your property secure to avoid  falling victim to an opportunist burglary

2.       Remove any debris or loose items from outside your home, while it is safe to do so

3.       If possible, put your car in a garage or avoid parking near trees and other objects that could become unstable

4.       Check where your family and any pets will be during the storm

5.     Be prepared for power cuts by having a torch and blanket to hand

If a wind storm does strike:

  • Get in touch with your insurer as soon as possible. Direct Line will usually pay for emergency repairs that need to be carried out to stop the damage getting worse
  • Take photographs of anything which has been damage by the storm, this may help streamline the settlement of your claim
  • Use a plastic sheet or tarpaulin to temporarily repair storm-damaged roofs.
  • Whilst nearly half of all weather related claims are due to roof damage, your personal safety is paramount. If it is not safe to do so, do not attempt temporary repairs.

The inconvenience caused by a damaged roof or smashed window can be substantial, with multiple rooms in your home affected including damage to ceilings, plaster and contents, the costs can also mount up pretty quickly. Whilst home buildings and contents insurance can’t help protect your home from the elements, having a comprehensive policy in place can ensure you’re not left out of pocket if the worst does happen.

Dan Simson continues: “We take every weather warning extremely seriously, and have emergency action plans into place, as well as teams on the ground and on the phones ready to assist customers if they need to make a claim. Our priority is reassuring householders and getting them back in their home as quickly as possible.”
