New research shows link between qualifications and professional position held and passing driving test first time

  • Those with no qualifications more likely to pass first time
  • People who studied science and maths more likely to take longer to pass than those who studied arts and culture

Failing a driving test first time can feel like a major set-back for a new driver, but research by Privilege DriveXpert has shown a link between qualifications and professional position held and the number of times it takes a person to pass their practical driving test.

Those with a post graduate qualification or above are most likely to take three or more attempts to pass (30 per cent). This compares to those with no qualifications, who are most likely to pass first time (59 per cent).

Additionally, those who own businesses are three times more likely to have taken their test four or more times (22 per cent) than those at lower levels on the professional ladder (seven per cent).

The study also showed a bent towards arts and culture, with those specialising in the arts at A-Level and above taking the least time to pass their test (1.9 times compared to 2.3 times for those specialising in science and maths).

Charlotte Fielding, Head of Privilege DriveXpert, comments:

“Passing first time isn’t the be-all and end-all of driving ability as many of the main skills we need to equip ourselves for our driving careers are learned over the years as our experience on the roads builds.

“While this research demonstrates a link with academic and professional success and passing the driving test, you don’t need to be a genius to take out our telematics insurance policy, DriveXpert, which will reward younger drivers for safe and smart driving as they clock up the miles."
