Motor insurance specialist, Churchill Insurance, sent TV presenter and father-of-two, Jeff Brazier, back to school to find out just what it takes to be a Lollipopper.

Brazier was shown the ropes during the busy morning school run at St Mary’s Primary, to raise awareness of Churchill’s nationwide campaign to put 50 Lollipop men and women back to the streets of Britain.

Parents and children were delighted to see Jeff donned head to toe in his Lollipopper uniform as they arrived at the school crossing. Although slightly apprehensive when stopping oncoming traffic for the first time, a quick briefing by the school's current Lollipopper, Irene, left Jeff raring to go, "Although I am slightly exhausted, this morning was incredibly enjoyable! It was extremely rewarding knowing that I was doing something so valuable for the community."

Since UK legislation was introduced in 2000 stating that Lollipoppers were no longer a legal requirement for schools, an increasing number of the iconic Lollipoppers have been taken off the roads. Following over 50,000 nominations across the UK, Churchill Insurance has announced which 50 schools it will provide with a Lollipopper for the new school year. In a bid to fill all 50 jobs, would-be Lollipop men and women across the UK are being asked to put themselves forward for the job.

On Churchill's Lollipopper recruitment drive, Jeff added, "Being a dad to my two boys, I know how important it is to know that your children are safe during the school run. Working at my old school with Irene has given me a real insight into the amazing work Lollipoppers do and it makes it all the more shocking they are being taken off the roads. I'd urge anyone who has considered being a Lollipopper to put themselves forward in their local community – they really do make a difference."

A recent survey by Churchill highlighted the necessity of deploying additional Lollipoppers, with 95 per cent of parents and 88 per cent of children (aged 5-11) feeling safer with the presence of a Lollipopper. A further 91 per cent of parents felt road safety at their local school had worsened in the past five years with an additional 32 per cent noting a Lollipopper had recently been removed from the local area – with no suitable replacement.
