BRITISH AGE DEADLINE FOR SUCCESS IS 32

  • Meeting ‘the one’, owning a property and having children are the most important things for people to tick off on their life CVs
  • Three in five say they would feel disappointed, upset and frustrated with themselves if they don’t reach their ‘life goals’ by the age target they have set themselves
  • British people need to earn £35,165 to feel successful
  • Men put pressure on themselves to earn 29 per cent more than women expect to, and have 127 per cent more in savings

By the age of 32, you should have already met ‘the one’, moved in together, bought a car and a home, had children, bought a pet, and have taken a gap year, according to new research by Privilege Home insurance.

The findings have revealed the key milestones British people feel they should have ticked off on their ‘life CVs’, and the pressure people are putting on themselves when they don’t feel they have met their own expectations.

When asked what they thought defined success in their lives, owning a home came out on top (37 per cent). With one in five (19 per cent) respondents saying they would be disappointed in themselves, if they hadn’t been handed the keys to their first property by the age target they had set.

Meeting ‘the one’ came next (27 per cent), followed by having children (27 per cent).

The results also show that UK residents are putting romance in fifth place on the list (21 per cent) above finance, with people giving themselves until the age of 41 to reach an average target wage of £35,165. Having savings came in eighth place (17 per cent), with people aiming to put away £26,775 and putting an ‘age deadline’ of 48 on themselves to achieve this.

Just under one in ten (eight per cent), owning your ‘dream car’ is also considered to be one of the signs that you have ‘made it’ in life, Mercedes being the most popular choice (11 per cent).

Brits can be hard on themselves if milestones aren’t reached by the age expectations they have set themselves. Three in five (63 per cent) said they would feel disappointed, upset or frustrated with themselves if they hadn’t met one or more of their goals by their expected age.

The statistics also showed a difference between the expectations men and women put on themselves, particularly regarding finances.

In respect of salary expectations, men are putting pressure on themselves to earn nearly £8,700 (29 per cent) more than women (£38,565 vs £29,901). Similar were savings, with men hoping to save up a whopping 127 per cent more than women (£41,893 vs £18,485).

Settling down also seems to be more important to men than women, with 30 per cent of men saying they need to find a long term partner to feel successful, versus 23 per cent of women.

Dan Simson, head of Privilege Home Insurance said:

“Our findings have shown that British people still ranked their home life very highly when it came to their own personal sense of wellbeing. Buying a house, meeting a long term partner and having children comprised the top three priorities – below savings, career and even salary.

“Whilst it is easy to write off home insurance as just another annoying task, having a good quality policy, and ensuring it has the required levels of cover to suit your needs, can help protect what is most important to you, no matter how old you are.”

Privilege Platinum home insurance is perfect for households with more belongings (or just more expensive belongings). It offers higher levels of buildings and contents cover, for complete peace of mind.

It also includes additional benefits such as covering your personal possessions when you’re out and about, accidental damage for your buildings and contents plus bicycles (£1,000 limit), and many more as standard.
