Supporting the UK Sepsis Trust through the Direct Line Group Community Fund
Direct Line Group are supporting The UK Sepsis Trust through phase three of the community fund. Sepsis is the body’s extreme response to infection and can be a life-threatening medical condition. It is a complication of infection usually bacterial but also viral, meaning that those critically ill with COVID-19 can also develop sepsis.
Sepsis is very common with over 245,000 cases in the UK each year, it is estimated that up to 48,000 people die each year from it. Those who recover are often left with life-changing conditions with over 80,000 a year suffering long-term health changes. The impact of COVID-19 is predicted to lead to a large increase in the number of people who develop these after-effects, therefore more must be done to support people through this illness.
The UK Sepsis Trust has set up a COVID-19 Recovery Response, which supports survivors and individuals bereaved by the virus. The program provides telephone and email support services and so far has helped over 2,500 people. Direct Line Group’s Community Fund has donated £45,000 to help the Trust continue this important work. This support is part of the third phase of the community fund launched this year to help provide ongoing support through COVID-19 to issues such as public health.
Dr Ron Daniels, CEO of UK Sepsis Trust commented, ‘We were absolutely delighted to learn that the Direct Line Group Community Fund has awarded the charity, UK Sepsis Trust, such a generous donation. As the pandemic took hold, earlier this year, we decided we must extend our support services to help those touched by COVID-19. This naturally put additional strain on our resources so the fact that Direct Line stepped up to support UKST is hugely helpful and much appreciated.’
