Direct Line Group signed Business in the Community’s Race at Work Charter in October 2020, to reinforce our commitment to drive broader equality, opportunity and progression, while building a culture that values difference.

This follows in-depth analysis of our ethnicity data, listening sessions with our Black colleagues and our first ever comprehensive survey on diversity and inclusion, to which nearly 6,500 of our people responded, which showed us:

• Around 17% of DLG Colleagues are Black, Asian or Minority Ethnic; Black colleagues make up 3% of this total
• BAME representation is concentrated in our lower and middle grades and reduces with seniority
• If you are Black or Minority Ethnic, it doesn’t feel as positive to work at DLG as it does for other colleagues

The Race at Work Charter sets out five key areas of focus to enable positive action towards supporting ethnic minority representation and inclusion, while making it clear that supporting equality in the workplace is the responsibility of all leaders and managers.

Alongside signing the Charter, we have introduced new targets to hold ourselves to account to increasing BAME and Black leadership representation by the end of 2022.

To support our goals, we have launched:

  • New recruitment principles for senior level recruitment, with anonymised CVs, diverse shortlisting and diverse panel interviews
  • An awareness and education programme to encourage greater empathy, including a reverse mentoring scheme to help our senior leaders build a greater appreciation of issues
  • Inclusive leadership training as part of one of our leadership development programmes, with training for all people managers in 2021 to build greater fluency and capability on diversity and inclusion issues

Vicky Wallis, Chief People Officer commented, “We’re determined to continue building a diverse business, that’s truly representative of communities across Britain and welcomes difference. Signing the Race at Work Charter is testament to our commitment to taking meaningful action to support race equality and ethnic minority inclusion, so all our people can thrive.”
